THE ASSOCIATED CHARITIES

The Associated Charities was organized July 1, 1897 , the first officers being, Dr. J. W. Stewart, president, and Miss Nellie Hayes, secretary.

In August, 1911, this association was reorganized with the following represented on its board of directors: Bethany Protective Association; Young Men's Christian Association; The Sunshine Society; The Silver Cross Circle, King's Daughters; Woman's Relief Corps; Rock Island County Anti-Tuberculosis Society; Rock Island Club; The Ladies Deborah Society; The Visiting Nurses' Association; The Retail Grocers' Association; Women's Christian Temperance Union; Women of the Grand Army of the Republic; In His Name Circle, King's Daughters; Helpers' Circle, King's Daughters; Women's American League; Rock Island County Humane Society; Rock Island Business Men's Association; The Daughters of Isabella; The Ladies' Auxiliary of the Humane Society and the Tri-City Social Service Club.

During 1912 the Associated Charities cared for 205 cases that were new, 140 old ones and ten cases for other societies, making a total of 355. Relief in the form of clothing, lodging, food and medical aid was given to 450, and during that year the total disbursements were $2,815.56. The total assets were $4,823.06, the liabilities were $3,136, leaving net assets of $1,687.06.

There are nearly two hundred members, in addition to hundreds who give regular donations in the form of clothing and food, as well as money. The officers deserve public commendation, for they are giving to the work a loyal service and an understanding of the true meaning of charity.
