Charles Lemon died April 12th in Rock Island at his home, 1312 25th Street aged 37 years. He is survived by his wife and 3 children, by his aged mother, a sister and a brother. He was formerly a resident of Milan . His parents moved to Rock Island about 20 years ago. He was a brother-in-law of Peter Philebar of Milan .

 

28 April 1902.

William 0., son of Mr. and Mrs. Ashley Fitzsimmons, died Wednesday at his parents' home aged 24 years. He was born 12 July 1880 and grew to manhood in Milan . The funeral will be Friday with burial in the Dickson burial ground.

 

Thomas E. Schindler, an old resident of Rock Island and proprietor of the Schindler meat market, 1817 2nd Avenue ( Rock Island ), died Monday. He was a native of Wernstadt , Austria on 31 December 1836 (his birthdate) and came to America at the age of 22 years. He came to Rock Island as a young man and has lived there since. He is survived by a son Edward and by 2 daughters: Miss Lucy Schindler and Miss Anna. He is also survived by 2 sisters Miss Johanna Schindler and Mrs. S.J. Stader; and by 3 brothers - Edward Schindler of Colorado Springs, Colorado,Joseph Schindler of LaCrosse, Wisconsin; and Ferdinand Schindler of Rock Island.

 

22 May 1902

Henry, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Moross, died Monday typhoid fever, aged nearly 10 years. He is survived by his parents, 3 sisters and 1 brother Mrs. Harry Dusenberry of Orion, Henry County ; Mrs. Thomas Counly of Florence , Colorado ; Tillie and Frank at home. Burial was Thursday at the Coal Valley Cemetery after the funeral at the Presbyterian Church. A brother and a sister are already buried in the Coal Valley Cem.

COAL VALLLEY: Alexander Cooper was killed last week in a railroad accident at Barrington , Illinois ; he was from Coal Valley. Burial was there yesterday, after the funeral at the home of his brother, Robert Cooper.

29 May 1902

Mrs. Letltia Payne of Hampton died there yesterday, aged 86 years. She was the mother of Senator William Payne. She was born 16 February 1816 In Green Co., Illinois and is survived by 8 sons and daughters: Jennie Case, Mary J. Slkes, Margery Brewster, Helen Seeburg, Will Payne, Jerry Payne, George A. Payne and Charles P. Payne. The funeral was Sunday at the Hampton Methodist Church with burial in the Hampton Cemetery .


J. Frank Robinson died Friday at his home on 20th Street . He was born near Hillsdale, Rock Island County on 27 February 1849 and in 1853, came to Rock Island with his father, Capt. T.J. Robinson who died in 1899. He was President of the Central Trust and Savings Bank and of the Rock Island National Bank. He is survived only by his wife, he being the last of the Robinson family. The funeral was Tuesday with burial in Chippiannock Cemetery , Rock Island .

5 June 1902

Dr. Reiter died Saturday at Osborn, Rock Island County , aged 77 years.

Faith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Crampton of Bowling, died May 29th at the family home aged 20 years. She is survived by her parents and grandmother, Mrs.Abby L. Morris of Rock Island ; by a sister and 3 brothers Albert W. Crampton and John M. Crampton of Rock Island and Mary and Carl at home. Burial was Friday in the Chippiannock Cemetery , Rock Island .

19 June 1902

W.W. Ferguson died May 14th at his home in Lone Elm, Kansas. He was born 26 February 1844 in Rock Island Co., Ills and was married to Mary A. Lambertine at Camden, Ills on 6 June 1867. They had 6 children, of whom 3 survive: William Ferguson and Mrs. Mamie Lamy of Nogal, New Mexico; and Fred Ferguson of Battle Creek, Michigan. His wife died 29 May 1886 and on 11 December 1888, he married Mrs. Virginia Kennedy. They had 3 children, of whom 1, Emmett, is living. He was a Civil War veteran. The funeral was May 16th at the M.E. Church with burial in the Deer Creek Cemetery, beside his former wife and children. He was a veteran of Company A., 93rd Ills Inf.

Andres Peterson died Tuesday at his home on Big Island . He was born in Denmark in 1832 and came to this country in 1862 and came to Illinois in 1879. He is survived by 6 sons Louis, Peter, Samuel, Chris, Fred, and James; and by one daughter: Mrs. Alvina Olms of Galesburg , Knox County . The funeral was today with burial in the Chippiannock Cemetery in Rock Island.

2 July 1902

Edgar and Emil Lindberg, aged 10 years and 13 years, drowned July 4th in the pond on 9th Avenue and 38th Street in Rock Island . They are the sons of Mr. and Mrs. John Lindburg, living at 15th Avenua and 29th Street . A relative, Harry Hill ofBurlington , Iowa was visiting at the time. There is another son in the family, John, aged 19 years. The father is a carpenter with the Moline Plow Company. The son John lost his arm in an accident three weeks ago John and Louis Grimes recovered the bodies of the 2 boys; burial was Sunday.

 

Peter Fries died Sunday at his residence on 18th Street . He was born 4 May 1824 at Faulbach in the Bavarian province of Lower Franconia . He came to America in 1848 and resided at Altona , Pennsylvania where he conducted a tannery for 2 years. He then came to Henry, Ills and was engaged in the leather business until 1854 when he came to Davenport , Iowa to run a grocery and vinegar business. He then moved to Rock Island and went into the wholesale liquor business on the corner of 1st Avenue and 18th Street where he remained until his death. He married Miss Theresa Dauber at Lacon , Illinois on 6 August 1852 ; she survives along with one daughter, Mrs. James Conner. The funeral was Wednesday at St. Mary's Church; John Dauber of Peoria attended. Burial was in the Chippiannock Cemetery .

George W. Cash died Sunday at his home, 954 20th Street , Rock Island. He was born in Indiana on 22 November 1849 and came to Will Co., Ills with his parents when he was a child.A few years later they moved to New Boston, Mercer Co., Ills where he grew to manhood and went into business. He then moved to Geneseo, Henry County . In 1878 he moved to Rock Island and eventually, along with his son, L.C. Cash, opened a flour and feed store. He was married at Geneseo, Henry County on 19 October 1873 to Miss Elizabeth Viola Raser who survives along with the son, L.C. Cash; 2 brothers - T.C. Cash of Cozad, Nebraska; and J.J. Cash of Newton, Kansas. The funeral was Thursday with burial in the Chippiannock Cemetery , Rock Island .

 

Mrs. Moses Tuttle died Wednesday at her home in Bowling. Mrs. Hingstrora of Rock Island is her daughter. (July 31st) Mrs. Moses Tuttle was born Ellen I. Graves on 25 July 1828 in New Hampshire and was almost 74 years old at the time of her death. She came to Illinois with her parents who settled in Rock Island in 1847. She married Mr. Tuttle in1849 and after living in Rock Island for 15 years, they moved ,to Bowling where they have since lived. She is survived by Mr. Beatty her husband and 4 daughters: Mrs. Emma Beatty who died about Wochner 12 years ago; Mrs. Elsie Hingstrom of Rock Island; Mrs. Minnie Coulter Wochner of Bowling; and Mrs. Nettle Coulter of Taylor Ridge; and by an adopted daughter Frances at home. The funeral was Friday at McConnell's Chapel with burial in the nearby cemetery there.

 

Fred Flog died last Friday at the county infirmary.

Phil R. Mitsch died July 27th. He was born in Rock Island in 1876 and educated in the Rock Island schools. He worked for the Tri-City Sprinkler Company and the Central Union Telephine Company and then went to work with his mother. He married Miss Addie Murphy 2 years ago. He is survived by his mother, wife, 2 sisters: Mrs. Eugene Dolph at home and Mrs. John Baughman of Butte , Montana . The funeral was Wednesday at their home, 1320 3rd Avenue with burial in the Chippiannock Cemetery in Rock Island beside his father who died a number of years ago.

Roscoe Morton, aged 16 years, drowned at the foot of 17th St. in Rock Island ; the body was recovered on Thursday.

21August 1902

Mylo Lee, an old citizen of Rock Island , died Sunday at Minneapolis , Minnesota where he had resided since 1896. He was a native of Salisbury , Connecticut where he was born 12 November 1828 . He came to Rock Island in 1852. The funeral was Tuesday from the Broadway Church with burial in the Chippiannock Cemetery in Rock Island .

12 Sept. 1902

Mrs. Kate B. Pearson died Friday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charles Bender In Davenport, Iowa. Mrs.Bender survives as do 4 children: Mrs. Fletcher of Blackhawk township; Sidney C. Pearson of Rock Island ; Frank Pearson of St. Louis ; and John Pearson of Quincy , Ills. Burial was in the Chippiannock Cemetery in Rock Island .

25 Sept. 1902

Miss Frances Crowell died September 19th at her home on Dickson Street in Milan , aged 49 years 1 month 3 days. Wm H. Brown is her step-father. The funeral was Sunday with burial in the Chippiannock Cemetery , Rock Island . She was a. member of the M.E. Church .' William Brown is her half-brother. Delia Remsburg of Ohio , Bureau County , is her cousin. Mr. and Mrs. P.P. Brown of Rock Island attended the funeral as did Mrs. Lyle and Mrs. J.A. Bruch of Tipton , Iowa .

John A. Axelson, the Port Byron shoemaker, was found dead in his shop on Friday.

Julius Goetz of 510 10th Street , a laborer employed in the blacksmith department of the Rock Island Plow Company, died Friday while at work.

Judge George W. Pleasants of Rock Island died Wednesday at his home. He was one of the oldest judges in the state.

Joseph Fitzpatrick, an old resident of Milan , died Thursday at his home in Milan ; the funeral will be Sunday. (October 30th issue: He was born in Rural township 55 years ago and spent his early life on a farm. After he married, he sold his farm and moved to Milan where he was in the milling business. The funeral was Sunday with burial in the Chippiannock Cemetery , Rock Island .

R. Hutchinson of Bowling tnp died Friday. He was born in Ireland on 7 August 1831 and has resided in Bowling since 1847. He was a member of the Episcopal Church. He is survived by a son Robert Henry; by one brother and by several sisters. The funeral was Sunday from Grace Episcopal Church.

29 Sept. 1902

ANDALUSIA : Mrs. Sarah Westby died Tuesday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mary Hubbard in Davenport , Iowa aged 75 years. She had been a resident of Andalusia for many years.

' COAL VALLEY : Mrs. Robert Gregg died Sunday aged 74 years.

SEARS: Sarah E., widow of the late James Ellis, died Saturday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. H.D. Folsom in Rock Island , aged 72 years. Burial was in the Chippiannock Cemetery , Rock Island .

30 Oct. 1902

Leona Rhea, little daughter of Mr. and Mrs.Henry Wilson died Tuesday. She was born 21 March 1899; she is survived by her parents, 6 brothers and 1 sister. The funeral was Thursday at the M.E. Church with burial in the Chippiannock Cemetery, Rock Island. Noda Wilson who has been working in Howard, Kansas is the brother of the dec'd.

Sterling Shipman, a Rock Island telegraph operator, died at his home this week; he is survived by his wife and children.

6 November 1902

Mrs. Arthur Titterington died Friday at Argenta , Arkansas . She was a former resident of Rock Island County . Burial was at Weaver 'Tp Reynolds, Ills. She was born Emily Weaver, daughter of the late \ Easton Weaver who was one of the early settlers of Bowling tnp.She is survived by her husband, one child, her brother, J.H. Keyes Weaver and sister Alice Keyes.

Julius Krell was killed in an explosion Sunday at a drugstore on 20th Street in Rock Island .

20 Nov. 1902

Mrs. Julius Crist died Tuesday at her home on Vandruff's Island ; she leaves 5 children, the youngest aged 3 months. (November 27th issue: Burial was in the Dickson Cemetery .)

Mrs. Lucy Reed Curtis, wife of Col. Henry Curtis, died Monday at her home, 1127 2nd Avenue , Rock Island , aged 66 years. She was born 15 December 1835 at Sag Harbor, New York and came west with her father, the late Marquis B. Osborn in 1837 and in 1845, they came to Rock Island where she was married to Col. Curtis in 1857. They have resided there since.

11 December 1902

William A. Hunter, a miner employed at the Silvis coal mines in Coaltown, was killed in a mine blast there; he died at the Moline hospital on Tuesday. He was aged 30 years and leaves a wife and 4 children - the eldest aged 10 years and the youngest aged 4y.

John Martin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Saulpaugh, died Wednesday. He was born 8 June 1902 . Burial was Thursday in the Chippiannock Cemetery in Rock Island .

18 December 1902

George, son of Mr.and Mrs. Henry Bastian, died last Friday at the home of his parents in Blackhawk township aged 12 years.Burial was Saturday.

Samuel Peterson who lived A miles south of Illinois City , drowned Wednesday at his farm, aged 72 years. He had been a resident of the county for 34 years. He is survived by his wife and a son (perhaps others).

Mrs. Frank Wangelin died Sunday at her home in Bowling, aged 61 years. She was born in Sweden "but had lived in this county for nearly century, coming here with her parents in 1857. She is survived by her husband and 3 sons: Edward Wangelin of Bowling; Charles and John Wangelin of Rock Island ; and by 3 daughters: Mrs. Emma Walker and Miss Mary and Miss Nettie, all of Bowling. The funeral was Tuesday at McConnell's Chapel with burial in the Chippiannock Cemetery , Rock Island .

Mrs. Lou Wilson died Monday at her home in Bowling. She is survived by her husband, 2 little daughters, her parents - Mr. and Mrs. Elwood Griffith and a sister, Mrs. Will Coyne. The funeral was Christmas Day with burial in the Chippiannock Cemetery in Rock Island . (January 1, 1903 issue: Henry Wilson of Geneva, Nebraska is her brother-in-law)

Jacob Kreis, an old resident of Rock Island , died Friday aged 79 years. He had resided in Rock Island for over 40 years. He is survived by his wife, a son E.B. Kreis, and by a daughter.

William Moffitt died December 31st at the home of his son James in Bowling tnp. He was born in January, 1811 in Ireland . The funeral was in Bowling tnp Friday with burial at McConnell's Chapel.

Camille Geloude of Moline died Friday at Colona, Henry County from injuries incurred while working there on the Hennepin Canal . He was aged 28 years and single.

Alva Carpentier died last Wednesday at St.Anthony's Hospital in Rock Island . He was born 28 December 1879 in Belgium and came to America in 1898. He was employed on the farm of Charles King near the Rock River .

15 January 1903

George A. Meyer was killed Friday in a coasting accident in Rock Island, aged 20 years, on the 22nd Street Hill, at tha residence Morrison of J.A. Morrison. Others injured were Miss Charlotte Smith, Hugo Smith , Bert Huesing, Nic Juhl and Shirley Folsom. The deceased Hueslng was the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Meyers who have resided .in Rock Island for several years, coming from the Folsom East. The funeral was Monday.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Brashar of Galva, Henry County and Mrs. E.P.Brashar of Milan attended the funeral of Mrs. Frank Brashar's grandmother, Mrs. J. Johnson of Reynolds on Saturday. She was 91 years old.

Enoch Wilson died Wednesday after an accident in his icehouse. Enoch T. Wilson, an old settler of Rural township, died January 14th at his home, 6 miles southeast of Milan . He was born 28 July 1842 in Montgomery Co., Indiana, son of the late Jacob M. Wilson. He came to Illinois with his parents at the age of 8 years and his lived here since. He was married on 6 February 1873 to Miss Hannah Stewart who survives along with a son William at home and a daughter, Mrs. Albert J. Simmon living near her father's home. He was a member of the Beulah Presbyterian Church, having joined on 8 August 1892 . The funeral was Saturday with burial in the Beulah Cemetery .)

Mr. and Mrs. William Chinn of Wellsburg , Iowa were called to Milan due to the death of his mother, Mrs. G.R. Grover who had resided in Milan for a number of years, but who had recently lived with her daughter, Mrs. George Ricketts in Taylor Ridge . Mrs. Grover was 84 years old.

Peter Garrity, a farmer who resided 3 miles southeast of Milan , was killed in a runaway accident in Rock Island on Friday; he was aged 40 years. He was born and reared in the lower end of the county but had resided southeast of Milan for several years. He is survived by his wife, the former Miss Fannie Killing and by 6 small children, the eldest aged 9 years. He is also survived by a brother James Hayes of Drury and by 4 sisters: Mrs. Mary Byron of Sweetland , Iowa ; Mrs. Sarah Reynolds of Grinnell , Iowa ; Mrs. Carl Witt of Drury; and Mrs. James G. Britton of Andalusia . The funeral was Sunday with burial in the Chippiannock Cemetery in Rock Island . He was only a few months old when his own father died, leaving his mother with 5 small children. His brother Thomas was killed a Leadville Colorado in a mining accident a few years ago. John, another brother, died about 1 year ago in old Mexico .

Mrs. Richard Dawson died Wednesday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. M.Schroeder, 1319 2nd Avenue , Rock Island . She was formerly a resident of Coal Valley and then of Cable, Mercer County . The funeral will be Friday with burial in Rock Island 's Chippiannock Cemetery .

Mrs. Amanda W. Benson, mother of Charles Benson of Big Island , died January 21st at her home in Hampton , aged 74 years. She had resided at Hampton since 1875. She is survived by 6 children 3 boys and 3 girls, all married. She was a member of the Methodist Church. The funeral was Friday with burial in the Hampton Cemetery .

Mrs. Abigail Peterson died Wednesday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Alford Castor in Verraillion, South Dakota aged 83 years.' She was the widow of the late Isaac Peterson who died several years ago when the couple was living In Andalusia .

Mrs. John P. Dolly of Rock Island died Monday at St. Anthony's hospital in Rock Island . She was born in Coal Valley on 27 December 1875. She is survived by her husband, 2 children, her mother - Mrs. Pauline Starofsky, 3 brothers and 2 sisters, all of Moline and by a sister Mrs. Fred Watt of Dallas , Texas .

George Busch died Friday in Rock Island aged 4 years; he was the son of Mrs. C. Busch formerly of Sears. The funeral was Friday at the home, 1000 3rd Avenue with Burial in the Chippiannock Cemetery .

David Johnston will be married March 4th to Anna Helena, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Hokanson. (March 5th issue: Ridgewood item: David Johnson married Miss Anna Nelson on Wednesday at the home of the bride's mother, Mrs. Hokanson.)

Police Officer B.J. Cabe died Friday at his home in Rock Island .

The little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hummel who lives near the watch factory died last Thursday; the funeral was Saturday.

Mrs. Harry P. Stepson, wife of the editor of the Rock Island ARGUS, died Saturday at their home, 934 22nd Street , Rock Island .She is survived by her husband, 2 daughters, her mother, 5 brothers and 2 sisters. The funeral was Monday.


John G. Ryan, formerly of Milan , died recently in Arkansas aged 40 years. He was born and raised in Milan and worked in the paper mill here, before leaving here 16 years ago. Larry Ryan Is the brother of the dec'd. The funeral was Tuesday at the home of his sister, Mrs. James Thompson, 717 6th Avenue , Rock Island . It appears that he was murdered for his money. He was the foreman of a bridge gang which had been working in the Southwest. He was shot near Bratesvllle, while on his way home.

12 March 1903

Capt. W.J. Ransom of Rock Island died Wednesday at St. Anthony's hospital in Rock Island .

John W. Fineley, a moulder with the Moline Pump Company, killed Lt. A.E. Bradley, commander of the Moline Naval Reserves this week. The dec'd was 26 years old and leaves his mother and one brother.

The eldest daughter of John Martin of Bowling tnp died Sunday aged 18 years; her mother died the same day, both of the measles. The husband survives as do 4 other children: John, Wilbur, Elmer, and Emily. "Her death was the first in a family of 14 children, the survivors being George of Jackson, Minnesota; Jacob of Pekin Swartz Kansas ; Philip of Partridge, Kans ; Mrs. Mary Swartz of St. Louis ; Mrs. Margaret Lepper of Topeka, Kansas; Mrs. Joseph Fitzpatrick F of Milan; Mrs. Emma Sherrard of Sherrard, Mercer County; August Sherrard of Rural; Laurence of Edgington; and Gottlieb, John, and Mrs. John Volk and Miss Christine Weiss of Rock Island." The funeral was Tuesday with burial in Little's Cemetery.

Mrs. Christian Seefeldt Sr. died Saturday at her home in Andalusia , aged past 70 years. She was a native of Germany . The family had resided at Buffalo, Scott Co., Iowa for many years and then moved to Andalusiaabout 15 years ago. She is survived by her husband and 7 children: Henry Seefeldt of Muscatine , Iowa ; Mrs. George Kuhn of Buffalo ; Theodore, Christian jr and Frank Seefeldt of Andalusia ; John Seefeldt of Red Oak, Iova; and Christina of Colorado.

'Mrs. John Volk died Tuesday at the family home, 1801 5th Avenue , Rock Island . The funeral was today. John Martin is her brother-in-law.

Isaac N. Ailes died Wednesday at his home opposite the tollgate, aged 81 years. The funeral was today with burial in the Dickson Cemetery .

COAL VALLEY : Lauretta, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.Gilbert Devoe, died Friday at the home of her parents. She is survived by her parents, and by 1 brother. The funeral was Sunday at the Presbyterian Church. She was born 12 October 1898 in Coal Valley and died at the age of 4 years, 5 months, 15 days.

9 April 1902

Mrs. Winthrop Robinson died at her home in Edgington township, aged 75 years. She had lived in the house where she died for years. She is survived by her husband and several children.

COAL VALLEY : Mr. Hintz died Friday at his home in this place; funeral was Sunday at the Presbyterian Church.

The 1-day old son of Mr. and Mrs. William Rettig of Blackhawk townshp died Thursday; the funeral was Wednesday-with burial in the Chippiannock Cemetery In Rock Island

SHADY GROVE: Mrs. Lance Sayre, an old resident of Rural, died April 15th. She was born Mary Herald in Pennsylvania on 17 April 1817 and was 2 days short of her 86th birthday. She married Lance Sayre in Logan , Ohio in 1840 and they then came to Illinois . They had 9 children, 2 dying in infancy. The surviving children are Perry Sayre of Oregon; Chas. Sayre of Minnesota; Mrs. Martha Couch, Mrs. John Long, Mrs. Brant Metzler, Mrs. Howard Worthington and W Allan Sayre all of whom live near their father's house. She was a member of the Lutheran Church . The funeral was Sunday at the Beulah Church .

SEARS: Charles Smith died Tuesday at his family home.

S.G. Eddy died Friday at the home of Dr. W.L. Eddy, aged 65 years. He has lived with his nephew for the past 8 months. For a number of years, he worked for the railroad, more recently at Denison , Tx . He is survived by a sister and a brother. The funeral was Sunday with burial in the Chippiannock Cemetery .

Mrs. Daisy Carman died Tuesday in Chicago . She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H.A. Smith of Milan . She was born inNeponsett , Illinois 26 years ago and is survived by her husband, 2 children Cecil aged 5 years; Ethel aged 2 years; by her parents, 2 brothers: Edward Smith of Iowa and Sheldon Smith; and by 1 sister Adeline at home. Burial was at Princeton . Among those attending, the funeral were Mrs. Julia Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Smith and W. Mclntire.

Thomas Hutchinson, a pioneer of Rock Island County , died Wednesday at his residence in Bowling aged 82 years. He was born in County Fermanagh , Ireland and came to the United States in the 1840s. He located in Bowling tnp in 1847 and has lived in that section of the county since. He and his 4 brothers all aided in building up the lower end of the county. He is survived by his wife, 5 sons and a daughter. The funeral will be Friday at the Episcopal Church in Bowling with burial at Preemption, Mercer County .

Jessie, little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Goben, died Tuesday at the home of her parents in Sears, aged 17 months.

Frank Ash died Tuesday at the home of his parents in Bowling tnp. (May 28th issue: The funeral was last Wednesday with burial in the Pre-emption Cemetery . Sam Ash of Colona is his brother.)

Oscar Anderson died Saturday at the home of John Palmer, aged 56 years. He came to this country from Sweden about 33 years ago. He has 5 brothers living in Sweden . Louis Johnson died Wednesday at his home in Milan. He was born in Sweden in 1856 and cane to this country as a young man. For a number of years, he worked for the Rock Island Plow Works. He later moved to Milan and opened a fish market. He is survived by his wife and by 1 son. The funeral was Thursday with burial in the Dickson Cemetery

Theodore Bergquist, a telephone lineman in Rock Island, was killed at Grand Isle below Rock Island. He is survived by his wife.

Miss Mary Matthews died Thursday at the home of her parents, Mr.and Mrs. Wilson Matthews. She is survived by her parents, one sister and 2 brothers. The funeral was Saturday vith burial in Chippiannock Cemetery, Rock Island.

Louisa, widow of the late Jacob Vandruff who died on Big Island several years ago, died Saturday at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. James L. Wynes in South Rock Island. She was one of the early settlers of this county. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Eberhart and came fron New York when a child, with her parents. She married Jacob Vandruff in 1849 and they lived on Big Island where a family of 10 children was born to them. All of the children survive. The funeral was Monday with burial in the Chippiannock Cemetery in Rock Island.

David Fitzgerald died Friday at the home of his stepson, Michael Minnehan, aged 72 years. He was one of the early settlers of the county and was a Civil War veteran, serving with Co. K., 58th Ills. He was a native of County Cork, Ireland and came to this country and for the past 40 years has farmed at the old place. He was married twice; his 1st wife died in 1881. He is survived by his second wife and 2 stepsons - James and Michael Minnehan Minnehan. The funeral was Sunday at St. Joseph's Church in Goldsmith Rock Island with burial in the Calvary Cemetery there. The pallbearers were all old soldiers William Goldsmith, John Wharton, David Karr, Steve Cushman and Kill K. Cox.

She was born 10 August 1815 in County Kilkenny, Ireland and came to Quebec, Canada in 1826. They moved to Watertown, NY in 1356 and to Elmwood, Ills In 1864. She came to Rural township in this county in 1869. Her maiden name.: was Sarah Payne. She married Thomas Hess on 31 March 1833 at St. Andrew, Canada. Her husband died 22 April 1883. She the was the mother of 5 children: Jacob Hess of Rock Island; William Hess who died in 1901; and of 3 dauphters Mrs. Elizabeth Wilkenson of Bedford, Iowa; Mrs. Sarah Weiss of Jackson, Minnesota; and Mrs. Mary Coulter who;died in 1878. There are also 13 prandchildren: James P. Coulter of Rural; Alexander Coulter of Taylor Ridge; Mrs. M. Cheney of Rural; Leslie K. Wilkenson and Justice W. Wilkinson of Bedford, Iowa; Georpe P. Wilkinson of Washinpton; H. Wilkinson and John A. Weiss of Jackson, Minnesota; and W.J., G.F. and Elizabeth (no surname is given) of this city. There are 19 preat-prandchildren. She was a member of the Episcopal Church. The funeral was Sunday.

John P. Dickson and 3 sisters of Pecatonica, Illinois are here visiting their childhood home. He is the son of Wm P. Dickson who moved from Joliet, coming over the old state road, passinp through Dixon, remaining about a week with old father Dickson at Dickson, Ills in March 1838. he arrived at Rock Island and put up at Jonathan Buffum's hotel.,.." His father burned lime for the canalwork on Vandruff 's Island and while boating stone on a flatboat, it sank drovning. 3 men - Thomas Dickson and 2 McMichael brothers. His father was rescued by Joe Vandruff Dickson in a canoe - 2 Drury brothers swan to shore. Later Wm P. Dickson built a log house and entered 40 acres of land 4 miles west of Milan where he lived until his death in February, 1347. He left a wife and 4 children: John P. Dickson and Louisa E. of Pecatonica, Ills; Martha of Delaware, Iowa; Davis and Kate of Lanark, Illinois. "My mother married Garret B. David Long in 1848 and she died in 1850 ... While a boy, I saw John Long, Young Aaron Long and Granville Young hung for the murder of Col. Davenport Davenport...."

James R. Smith died August 27th at his home. He was born 17 October 1819 in County Fermaugh, Ireland and was married on 16 June 1845 to Martha A. Jones who died 20 years ago. He came to New York State in 1853 and in 1859 came to Rock Island County. In 1380, he moved to Platte Co., Nebraska and he has resided on the old homestead there up to the present time. He is survived by 4 sons and 3 daughters: Anna L., Henry L., and William L., and James R. Smith of Monroe, Nebraska; Jennie C. Schoomaker of Reynolds, Ills; Hattie E. Dickson of Rock Island; and George C. Smith of Fullerton. Another daughter, Carrie V. Hodson, died 17 years ago. There are also 12 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. She survives as do 2 sons: Charles jr and William D. Brandenburg; his aged mother Mrs. A.Gitt; by 3 half-brothers: J.W. Gitt of Sears; Wm 0. Gitt of South Rock Island; (these are the only 2 half-brothers listed); by two half-sisters: Mrs.Jennie Devoe of-South Rock Island ; and Mrs. Cora Ellis of Bowling. Alexander Coulter died Friday at the home of his son, W.J. Coulter, 2226 5th Avenue in Rock Island. The funeral was Monday with burial in the Beulah Cemetery in Rural tnp. He was born 15 August 1822 in Argyle, Washington Co., New York and came west in 1864, making his home in Peoria, Ills. In 1870 he came to this county and was a farmer in Rural; he has resided in this vicinity since. He was married in 1859 to Miss Mary Hess of Loraine, New York; she died in 1870. He is survived by these children - W.J. Coulter of Rock Island; J.P. Coulter of Rural; Mrs. Maggie Chaney of Rural; and Alexander Coulter of Taylor Ridge.

W.L. Sweeney, at one time tollgate keeper at the Milan bridges, died recently at Wichita, Kansas. Burial will be in Rock Island.

Edward Bruwalder froze to death between Saturday night andTuesday morning. Be lived alone in a shanty near the farm of Louis Vetter. He was found by Leonard Swinker, aged 86 years, on the side of the lane that leads to his cabin. The deceased was born in Switzerland and was aged 63 years. Re has lived in this vicinity for over 30 years and leaves 2 children in the Old Country and.one sister in Indiana. (February 4th issue: The late Ed Bruwalder also had a sister at Terre Haute, Indiana who was at one time employed by Mr. Vogel in Rock Island. She later married a slaoonkeeper in Terre Haute.)

ANDALUSIA: David Finley died January 12th at the home of his daughter, Anna Spigles in Andalusia. He was born 24 March 1828in Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania and came to Peoria, Illinois in 1849 and lived there for 1 year before coming to Rock Island County where he has since lived. He married Anna Carter on25 March 1851; she died 29 September 1880. They had 6 children, 4 of whom are dec'd. The 2 surviving children are David L. Finley of Reynolds and Anna wife of Geo. Spigles of Andalusia.The funeral was at the Methodist Episcopal Church with burial Thursday in the Andalusia Cemetery.

Sgt. Peter Lorenzen of the U.S. Army retired, died Monday in Sears aged 70 years. He came to the Rock Island Arsenal 10 years ago and retired 5 years ago. He is survived by his wife and 5 children, all at the home in Sears. Burial was in the National Cemetery in Rock Island , on Wednesday.

James Griffin of Milan died Sunday at his home. He was born on Big Island and would have been 55 years old on April 17th. He lived on Big Island for a long time and then moved to Milan some years ago. He was a bachelor and was a hunter, trapper and vegetable truck farmer by trade. He is survived by his twin sister, Mrs. Mary Whorton and by his brother George Griffin of Milan and brother Joshua Griffin of Andalusia . The funeral was Tuesday with burial in the Dickson burial grounds.

Patrick McKee died June 22nd at his home east of Milan on the River Road . He had resided here for about 10 years and leaves a wife and 4 children. The funeral was Saturday at the Coal Valley Presbyterian Church with burial in the Orion Cemetery .

Mrs. E.H. Weaver died Tuesday at the family home in Sears. She was born 7 June 1867 and married Joseph Busch in October, 1875. He died a few years ago. She married E.H. Weaver on 6 January 1904 and they had 1 child - Alnora. By her former husband, she leaves these children: Maerie, Goldie, Susie and James. The funeral was Wednesday with burial in the Dickson Cemetery .

Mrs. Viola Travis (colored) of Milan died Sunday at her home on Dickson Street . She was born 26 June 1873 and married Derry Travis at Sears on 17 September 1903 . She is survived by her husband and by 1 daughter, Estella. The funeral was Tuesday with burial at Jacksonville , Illinois .

Mrs. William Hoffman died Sunday at her home, 3 miles west of Milan .She is survived by her husband and 4 children: Willie, Eva, George, and Minnie. She was 33 years old. The funeral was Tuesday with burial in the Chippiannock Cemetery in Rock Island .

Mrs. Mary J. Kerr died August 1st at her home at the tollgate. She was born in Austin , Minnesota on 28 September 1869 and moved with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John ,Williams to Rock Island at the age of 3 years. She was educated in the 1st ward school. She married Newton Kerr on 20 November 1895 . She was a member of the Rock Island Baptist Church . She is survived by her husband, 2 children - Mildred aged 7 years and Margaret aged 5 years; by her parents, and by a sister Alice. The funeral was today with burial in the Chippiannock Cemetery in Rock Island .

Dr. Joseph Huyett died October 6th in Milan . He was born in Huntington County near the town of Alexandria , Pennsylvania on a farm, on 11 September 1820 . He was the youngest of a large family, all of whom are dec'd except for a sister, Mrs. Cathrine Patton of Washington DC . The dec'd was first a store clerk and then entered Jefferson Medical School in Philadelphia and graduated In 1843. In 1844, after beginning a practice at Williamsburg , Pennsylvania , he married Miss Harriet L., daughter of Judge Joseph Adams of Williamsburg . They came to Illinois In 1848 and at first lived on the government island. The following spring, they came to Camden Mills (now Milan), living in the house on Dlckson Street opposite what is known as the Bradley place, until 1872, when he built the home where he has lived for the last 33 years. They were the parents of 7 children, 5 of whom survive: Mrs. Mary C. Moorhead Monmouth, Warren County ; Mrs. Elizabeth G. Sears of Milan ; Mrs. Anna A. Crisswell of Joy; Mrs. Clara A. Sydnor who has lived on the home place for the last 5 years; and Dr. Joseph Herman Huyett of Rock Island . Mrs. Huyett died In April, 1898. There are 16 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. The deceased was a Civil War veteran, serving as a surgeon with the 93rd Ills Infantry. The funeral was Monday with burial in the Chippiannock Cemetery in Rock Island . His 3 sons-in-law were Geo. W. Sears, Dr. Matthew Crisswell, and Geo. R. Sydnor. 2 grandsons are Dr. W.W. Moorhead of Aledo and Jos. H. Moorhead of Milan . His nephew Is Jos. A. Mclaughlin of Geneseo, Henry County . George H. Adams of Latrobe , Pennsylvania is his nephew.

Grace, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Stanley died Sunday at Reynolds, aged 8 years.

Engineer Scott was killed Saturday in a train wreck, 1 mile east of Pre-emption. He leaves a wife and3 children - a daughter at home, a son in Rock Island and Mrs. John Mills of Sherrard. The funeral wasTuesday in Sherrard with burial in Orion, Henry County .

The funeral of Miss Mabel Daxon was Saturday at Andalusia . She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wn Daxon. She died Thursday. The funeral was at the Baptist Church with burial in the Andalusia Cemetery . Mabel Edna, daughter of Wn and Mary L. Daxon died October 5th at the home of her parents, east of Andalusia aged 14 years 8 months 13 days. She was born in Rural tnp where she spent the first 2 years of her life. The funeral was October 7th at the Baptist Church in Andalusia . She was a member of the Baptist Sunday School. Burial was in the Andalusia Cemetery . She is survived by her parents, 3 sisters - Louise, Anna and Lila; and by a brother Dan who is in Hillyard , Washington .

Mrs. John Murphy died Monday at Edgington aged 48 years. She was born in Henry County and she and her husband formerly lived near Carbon Cliff. They moved to Edgington 3 years ago. She is survived by her husband and 6 small children. The funeral was Wednesday with burial in the Calvary Cemetery in Rock Island .

Bernice, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Johnston of Reynolds, died Thursday.

Joseph Graham died Friday at his home in Rock Island , 700 4th Street aged over 80 years. He was born in Ireland in 1836 and came to this country about 50 years ago. He was a farmer for many years. His wife, Mrs. Anna Graham, died 23 March 1904 . Their surviving children are 2 sons: James Graham of Rock Island and John Graham of Viola, Mercer County . There are also 2 surviving sisters Mrs. Margaret Armstrong and Mrs. Eliza Sandusky, both of Rock Island . The funeral was Sunday with burial in the Wood Cemetery , east of the Orangeman's picnic grounds near Pre-emption.

Mrs. Julius Burwell died January 31st at her home in New York City . She lived in Rock Island for many years. She was formerly Miss Flora Boyle.

The Rev. J.D. Smith, who was formerly a pastor in Milan , died recently at Downer's Grove near Chicago . The funeral was last Wednesday. He was a Methodist minister here from 1902-1903. (February 15th issue: The Rev. J.D. Smith who served 2 terms as pastor of the Milan M.E. Church , was the pastor of the M.E. Church at Neponset, Ills in 1864. At various times, he had served at Smith Waupecan, Whitefield, Kirkwood and Bushnell. He was born 11 June 1837 in Waterloo , New Jersey and entered the ministry at the age of 17 years. He was married in 1858 to Miss Elizabeth Keller of Groveland , Illinois and they had 4 children.

William Canna* of Milan ; and Mrs. Rebecca Taylor and Mrs. W. Benn Taylor of Rock Island attended the funeral of their father, Benn Cannam of Illinois City on Friday. Burman Cannam died March 8th at the residenceof his son John S. Cannam aged 78 years, 4 months, 8 days. He was the only son in a family of 5 children, all of whom are now deceased. He was born 11 October 1827 in Huntingdon , England and was married in England in 1848. They had 6 children -William Cannam of Milan ; Mrs. Rebecca Taylor and Mrs. Eliza Benn ; of Rock Island ; Mrs. Rose Bohan who died several years ago; and Emma who died in infancy; and John S. Cannam of Buffalo Prairie. There are 13 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. In 1848, he came to America and settled at Lockport , New York where he remained until 1854 when he came to Milan . In 1878, he moved to a farm in Buffalo Prairie where he was living at the time of his death.

His wife died 26 July 1889 . He joined the Lutheran Church in England but in Milan he was a member of the M.E. Church . The funeral was Saturday, March 10th at the Methdodist Church in Illinois city with burial beside his wife in the Illinois City Cemetery .

Raut Mrs. Raut drowned in the Rock River Tuesday near the old cotton mills at Sears. She is survived by her husband. (May 10th issue: The body of Mrs. Belle Raut who drowned March 27th in the Rock River was found Tuesday in the Hennepin Canal . The remains were shipped to Parish, New York .)

John McCandless, an old citizen of Rural, died Tuesday at his home, aged about 87 years. He leaves a wife and 3 children: George and Miss Laura at home and Wallace of New York City. The funeral was today with burial in the Western Cemetery .

George Tenges died Monday at Dayton , 0hio. He was born 14 February 1868 in Dayton . He learned the blacksmith's trade with his brother, the late William Ten ges, and for 18 years, he was employed in his brother's shop in Milan . His mother, 3 brothers and a sister livein Dayton . Mrs. Wm Tenges lives in Milan .

28 June 1906

Bernard Redecker died Monday at his home near Taylor Ridge aged 65 years. He was born in Hanover , Germany and came to Rock Island in 1878 where he resided for 10 years before moving to a farm southwest of Milan . One year ago, he sold his Blackhawk farm and purchased the farm near Taylor Ridge on which he died. he is survived by his wife and 4 children - Ben, Katherine, Mary, and Anna who reside at home. The funeral was Wednesday at St. Mary's Church in Rock Island with burial in the Calvary Cemetery

Mrs. Maria J. Patterson died this week at the home of her son, aged 79 years last February. She is survived by 2 aged sisters - Mrs. Buffum of Rock Island and Mrs. Bopes who lives in the home of her son-in-law, F.P. McMichael. She also leaves 4 children.

Mrs. Laura B. Sayre-Thompson died at her home, 734 221/2 Street, Moline on Tuesday. She was born in Rural township on 18 May 1861 and came to Moline 17 years apo. She married Harvey Thompson on 24 November 1881 . He survives, along with 3 children - Clifford, Grace, and Mae. She is also survived by 2 sisters, one brother, and her parents - Mr. and Mrs. A.M. Sayre of 1130 24th St. , Moline .

19 July 1906

Harry Sizer and George Einen of Miles , Iowa drowned in the Mississippi River opposite Port Byron. Sizer was 25 years old and single and is survived by an aged, widowed mother. Linen was aged 23 years and single.

Joseph Henderson Fisher died Monday at the county infirmary. He was born in Ohio and resided for many years at Napoleon, Ohio . Fe travelled extensively, including in South America and finally settled at Horton , Kansas . Later, he moved to Plainvell , Michigan and then to Davenport , Iowa about 1 year ago. Le came to Milan later. He was 74 years old and leaves a wife, several sons and a daughter - the latter lives in Davenport .

Mrs. Warren Anderson of 1622 15th Street , died November 7th at the home of her sister, Mrs. David Johnston near Reynolds. She is survived by her husband, her mother, and stepfather — Mr. and Mrs. John A. Hokanson; by 2 sisters — Mrs. David Johnston of near Reynolds and Miss Manda Nelson at home; by 2 brothers — Henry Nelson of Blackhawk and Herbert Hokanson at home. She was born Florence Nelson on 18 July 1873 and married Warren Anderson of Rock Island on 12 June 1896 . They had 1 child who died in infancy. Burial was In Rock Island's Chippiannock Cemetery .

Edna Louise Anderson died Monday at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Anderson in South Pock Island . She was born 22 January 1883 in Rock Island and had resided on Vandruff's Island and in Milan most of her life. She graduated from Rock Island high school in 1902 and studied at the Illinois Normal school at neKalb. She taught for 2 years at the South heights school and then at the Garfield school in Moline . She is survived by her parents, 3 sisters and 3 brothers: Ruth, Grace, Enzel, Ralph, Everett, and Spencer. The funeral was Wednesday.

Mrs. Barbara Hinderer died Wednesday. She was born 21 January 1851 in Wurtenburp, Germany and came to America at the age of 3 years. In 1875, she married John Hinderer; he died in 1903. She is survived by 3 children and 5 sisters: George, Bertha and Millie hinderer; Mrs. Rose Hammond of Nevada; Mrs. S. Ramsey of Kansas; Mrs. Kate Arts of Richland Grove, Mercer County, Illinois: Mrs. Mary Swicker also of Richland Grove; Mrs. Tillie Spengler of Reynalds. The funeral will be November 9th with burial in the Chipplannock Cemetery.

John Zellig died Wednesday at his home in Bowling. The funeral will be November 16th with burial in the Pre-emption Cemetery.

Mrs. Almira Clarke who lived in Milan from 1844-1861, died November 29th in Monmouth, Warren County at her home there aged 93 years, 1 month 20 days. She was the widow of the late William Clarke. She was born in Canaan , New Hampshire - the daughter of Caleb Pillsbury who was a soldier in the War of 1812, including the Battle of Lundy's Lane. After the war, he returned home and married Miss Anna Underhill of Piernont, New Hampshire and they had 8 children,with Almira being the oldest. 4 children died in early youth; the youngest child - Ithamar P. Pillsbury, died a few years ago. Almira was born 9 October 1813 in Grafton Co., New Hampshire and shortly afterwards, the family moved to St. Lawrence Co., New York where they lived for some years. In 1863, they came to Lynn township, Henry Co., Illinois and built the first house there. She was married by the Rev. Ithamar Pillsbury at his home in Andover on 23 August 1842 to William Clarke. 2 years later, they care to Milan where Mr. Clarke built the 2nd house in the villa ge. There, she was a charter member of the Presbyterian Church which was organized on 5 April 1845 . Afterwards, they lived on a farm in henry County , then in Orion, and later in Bloomington . In 1896, they moved to Monmouth and Mr. Clarke died there on 28 January 1901 . She is survived by 5 children - John F. Clarke, Edward P. Clarke, Mrs. Esther Carnes, and Louisa Clarke, all of Monmouth and Mrs. Villinr Smith of Ontario , California . The funeral was December 1st at their residence, 413 E. 2nd Avenue , in Monmouth.

ANDALUSIA : Elliott Bird died Saturday aged 72 years. He is survived by a wife and several children. The funeral was at the Methodist Church with burial in the Andalusia Cemetery .
