James Lafferty of Milan has reported that his step-daughter, Charlotte Bell has eloped with David Pitts, a colored man aged about 40 years. She is 16 years old. Mr. Lafferty is a teamster. (December 4th issue: the Pitts couple was arrested at Albany ,Whiteside County .)

Frank J. Wilson of Rural married Miss Matilda C. Erb of Bowling on Wednesday in Rock Island .

William A. Hunter, a miner employed at the Silvis coal mines in Coaltown, was killed in a mine blast there; he died at the Moline hospital on Tuesday. He was aged 30 years and leaves a wife and 4 children - the eldest aged 10 years and the youngest aged 4y.

John Martin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Saulpaugh, died Wednesday. He was born 8 June 1902 . Burial was Thursday in the Chippiannock Cemetery in Rock Island .

Robert McQuaid has sold land in Bowling tnp to R. McConnell. Born to Mr. and Mrs. John Strayer, a boy, last week.

Friends at Decatur , Ills have learned of the whereabouts of J.A. Hall, a former resident of that city, who has been staying at the Milan house. He is heir to money left him by his uncle, J. Hogan of Memphis , Tennessee .

Samuel Peterson who lived A miles south of Illinois City , drowned Wednesday at his farm, aged 72 years. He had been a resident of the county for 34 years. He is survived by his wife and a son (perhaps others).

Mrs. Frank Wangelin died Sunday at her home in Bowling, aged 61 years. She was born in Sweden "but had lived in this county for nearly century, coming here with her parents in 1857. She is survived by her husband and 3 sons: Edward Wangelin of Bowling; Charles and John Wangelin of Rock Island ; and by 3 daughters: Mrs. Emma Walker and Miss Mary and Miss Nettie, all of Bowling. The funeral was Tuesday at McConnell's Chapel with burial in the Chippiannock Cemetery , Rock Island .

SHADY GROVE: Henry Simmon celebrated his 71st birthday last Wednesday. All his children attended the celebration except 2 sons in Iowa .

Mrs. Lou Wilson died Monday at her home in Bowling. She is survived by her husband, 2 little daughters, her parents - Mr. and Mrs. Elwood Griffith and a sister, Mrs. Will Coyne. The frozen bodies of Charles Arch ----- (torn), (torn) Smith, and William Donnel --- (torn) were found Christmas night near Andover in Henry County .

Emil Engstrom, an employee of the Channel Ice Company, was found frozen in the rear of the company on Christmas morning by 2 boys George Murry and Albin Olson.

William Moffitt died December 31st at the home of his son James in Bowling tnp. He was born in January, 1811 in Ireland . The funeral was in Bowling tnp Friday with burial at McConnell's Chapel.

The home of J.W. Kiskadden in South Rock Island burned Sunday.

Camille Geloude of Moline died Friday at Colona, Henry County from injuries incurred while working there on the Hennepin Canal . He was aged 28 years and single.

Alva Carpentier died last Wednesday at St.Anthony's Hospital in Rock Island . He was born 28 December 1879 in Belgium and came to America in 1898. He was employed on the farm of Charles King near the Rock River .

George A. Meyer was killed Friday in a coasting accident in Rock Island, aged 20 years, on the 22nd Street Hill, at tha residence Morrison of J.A. Morrison. Others injured were Miss Charlotte Smith, Hugo Smith , Bert Huesing, Nic Juhl and Shirley Folsom. The deceased Hueslng was the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Meyers who have resided .in Rock Island for several years, coming from the Folsom East. The funeral was Monday.

C.B. Ellis is now located at Beaumont , Texas .

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Brashar of Galva, Henry County and Mrs. E.P.Brashar of Milan attended the funeral of Mrs. Frank Brashar's grandmother, Mrs. J. Johnson of Reynolds on Saturday. She was 91 years old.

John Brashar of Milan married Mrs. Mary 0. Wllkenson of Sterling, Whiteside Co., Ills last Friday in Davenport , Iowa . They will live on 7th Avenue and 12th Street in Rock Island .

Enoch Wilson died Wednesday after an accident in his icehouse. Enoch T. Wilson, an old settler of Rural township, died January 14th at his home, 6 miles southeast of Milan . He was born 28 July 1842 in Montgomery Co., Indiana, son of the late Jacob M. Wilson. He came to Illinois with his parents at the age of 8 years and his lived here since. He was married on 6 February 1873 to Miss Hannah Stewart who survives along with a son William at home and a daughter, Mrs. Albert J. Simmon living near her father's home. He was a member of the Beulah Presbyterian Church, having joined on 8 August 1892 . The funeral was Saturday with burial in the Beulah Cemetery .)

Mr. and Mrs. William Chinn of Wellsburg , Iowa were called to Milan due to the death of his mother, Mrs. G.R. Grover who had resided in Milan for a number of years, but who had recently lived with her daughter, Mrs. George Ricketts in Taylor Ridge . Mrs. Grover was 84 years old.

Edward J. Malone who was married on Thursday to Miss Norah Andress died 2 hours after being married. He came to Rock Island several months ago and lodged with Miss Andress. He was 58 years old and was a native of Ireland . Little is known of his past, but it is believed that he was an heir to an immense estate in the St. Clair old country, Mrs. Malone was formerly the wife of J.K.P. St. Clalr, an old time printer in Rock Island . She was granted a divorce from him a few months ago.

Miss Myrtle Chaney who was born in Milan and whose parents live on 15th Street, Rock Island , was married in Omaha Nebraska last week.

Adam McBurney has sold 80 acres to Peter Otzen.

Mrs. Harriet A. Johnston of Milan was declared insane in the county court Friday and was sent to the Watertown hospital.

Peter Garrity, a farmer who resided 3 miles southeast of Milan , was killed in a runaway accident in Rock Island on Friday; he was aged 40 years. He was born and reared in the lower end of the county but had resided southeast of Milan for several years. He is survived by his wife, the former Miss Fannie Killing and by 6 small children, the eldest aged 9 years. He is also survived by a brother James Hayes of Drury and by 4 sisters: Mrs. Mary Byron of Sweetland , Iowa ; Mrs. Sarah Reynolds of Grinnell , Iowa ; Mrs. Carl Witt of Drury; and Mrs. James G. Britton of Andalusia . The funeral was Sunday with burial in the Chippiannock Cemetery in Rock Island . He was only a few months old when his own father died, leaving his mother with 5 small children. His brother Thomas was killed a Leadville Colorado in a mining accident a few years ago. John, another brother, died about 1 year ago in old Mexico .

Mrs. Richard Dawson died Wednesday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. M.Schroeder, 1319 2nd Avenue , Rock Island . She was formerly a resident of Coal Valley and then of Cable, Mercer County . The funeral will be Friday with burial in Rock Island 's Chippiannock Cemetery .

George Johnson of Richmond , Kansas is here visiting his cousin, Mrs. Robert McConnell. He lived here about 20 years ago.

Mrs. Amanda W. Benson, mother of Charles Benson of Big Island , died January 21st at her home in Hampton , aged 74 years. She had resided at Hampton since 1875. She is survived by 6 children 3 boys and 3 girls, all married. She was a member of the Methodist Church. The funeral was Friday with burial in the Hampton Cemetery .

George Busch died Friday in Rock Island aged 4 years; he was the son of Mrs. C. Busch formerly of Sears. The funeral was Friday at the home, 1000 3rd Avenue with Burial in the Chippiannock Cemetery .

SHADY GROVE: There was a Little family reunion held at Clearwater , Kansas home of Robt Little, an uncle of Postmaster Robt Little of this place.

SHADY GROVE: Mrs. James Lafferty and Cyrus D. McLaughlin left for Emerson , Nebraska to attend the funeral of their brother, James Finley McLaughlin who died Tuesday at Emerson. He vras the 5th child, one of a pair of twin boys, born to the late Randal and Rebecca McLaughlin, born on Big Island 11 March 1852 . His twin died in infancy. His father died when he was 9 years old; his mother raised the family in this vicinity. She now survives, aged 81 years. In early manhood, he moved to western Iowa where he married; later he moved to Emerson, Nebraska where they have lived since 1386. He is survived by his wife; by a son Randal and a daughter Sadie these brothers and sisters: Jos. A. Mclaughlin of Geneseo, Ills; C. Blair Mclaughlin of Portland, Oregon; George A. Mclaughlin of Sioux City, Iowa; Wm G. and Lewis H. McLaughlin of Emerson, Nebraska; Mrs. Isabella Lafferty of )Milan; Cyrus D. McLaughlin and Mary E. McLaughlin at home.

Mrs. Harry P. Stepson, wife of the editor of the Rock IslandARGUS, died Saturday at their home, 934 22nd Street , Rock Island .She is survived by her husband, 2 daughters, her mother, 5 brothers and 2 sisters. The funeral was Monday.


John G. Ryan, formerly of Milan , died recently in Arkansas aged 40 years. He was born and raised in Milan and worked in the paper mill here, before leaving here 16 years ago. Larry Ryan Is the brother of the dec'd. The funeral was Tuesday at the home of his sister, Mrs. James Thompson, 717 6th Avenue , Rock Island . It appears that he was murdered for his money. He was the foreman of a bridge gang which had been working in the Southwest. He was shot near Bratesvllle, while on his way home.

Squire Dean attended the funeral of his brother Henry's wife at Galva, Henry County . Henry Dean's mother, sister and wife have all died within 8 months. Mrs. Dean is survived by her husband, and 3 children, the youngest aged 1 month.

George Collingwood married Miss Mollie Mueller, both of Sherrard,Mercer County on Wednesday at the courthouse.

George Tenges has left on a trip to New Mexico .

SEARS: Mrs. Dr. Hawes, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Davfd Karr, has moved to Toulon , Ills where her husband is a dentist.

COAL VALLEY : Mr. Pierpot who had been visiting here, has returned to his home in Lincoln , Nebraska due to the illness of his mother.

COAL VALLEY : Joseph Sackville died here Thursday; he has lived in Rock Island County for 51 years. Ke is survived by his wife, and 4 children - William and James Sackville of Coal Valley ; and Mrs. Chas. Brahme of Coal Valley ; and Robert Sackville at home.

Wm L. Ramsey, a Mercer County farmer, was found dead Thursday at the depot hotel in Monmouth, Warren County . He is survived by his wife and 4 daughters.

John W. Fineley, a moulder with the Moline Pump Company, killed Lt. A.E. Bradley, commander of the Moline Naval Reserves this week. The dec'd was 26 years old and leaves his mother and one brother.

The eldest daughter of John Martin of Bowling tnp died Sunday aged 18 years; her mother died the same day, both of the measles. The husband survives as do 4 other children: John, Wilbur, Elmer, and Emily. "Her death was the first in a family of 14 children, the survivors being George of Jackson, Minnesota; Jacob of Pekin Swartz Kansas ; Philip of Partridge, Kans ; Mrs. Mary Swartz of St. Louis ; Mrs. Margaret Lepper of Topeka, Kansas; Mrs. Joseph Fitzpatrick F of Milan; Mrs. Emma Sherrard of Sherrard, Mercer County; August Sherrard of Rural; Laurence of Edgington; and Gottlieb, John, and Mrs. John Volk and Miss Christine Weiss of Rock Island." The funeral was Tuesday with burial in Little's Cemetery.

The family had resided at Buffalo, Scott Co., Iowa for many years and then moved to Andalusiaabout 15 years ago. Jacob Heidenrich died Sunday in the Davenport ( Iowa ) Cemetery, aged 39 years. His body was found lying across the graves of his parents in the City Cemetery .
