John Looney
Mr. Looney was 5 foot 8 and slight of build, weighing about 125 to 135 pounds. According to his 1924 poster, he had black hair, dark, beady eyes, a sallow complexion, and a large nose slightly twisted to the right. and he was known to sometimes wear a black beard as a disguise.
Make sure and see the movie Road to Perdition --- a great fictional version of John Looney's life even though they call him "Mr.
Rooney." There are references to Rock Island and the Tri-Cities in the movie. The book was written by Max
Collins, Muscatine, Iowa.
MSNBC found this picture of John Looney and requested permission to use it. I
contacted the Rock Island Argus / Daily Dispatch for permission since they had republished it. The original picture
is past copyright but republishing it made things a little fuzzier. However, Roger Ruthart, editor, gave permission
to let MSNBC use the picture. Look for the MSNBC article here
