Robert L. Nelson, 72, of 305 6th St. Sherrard, formerly of Rock Island, died Thursday at Franciscan Medical Ceneter, Rock Island .

Services are 10 a.m. Monday at Hodgson Funeral Home, Rock Island . Burial is in National Cemetery , Arsenal Island . Visitation is 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday. Memorials may be made to the local Diabetes Association. Mr. Nelson was born Augst 8, 1917, in Rock Island

. He married Betty Dean in February 1937. He later married Mabel Petty Aug 8, 1983 , in Las Vegas . He was employed as a carpenter and cabinet maker working for various construction companies including Charles Studahar, Rock Island , for many years.

He retired in 1980. He was a member of Sherrard Presbyterian Church; Moline American Legion Post 246; Moline Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2153; and Carpenters Union Local 166. He was a World War II Navy veteran, serving as an officer in the Seabees in the European and Pacific Theaters.

Survivors include the widow; daughters, Sharon Wakeland, and Marilyn Gould, both of Milan , Judith Callen, Rock Island , Claudette Davis, Albuquerque , N.M. , and Christine Beauchamp in Michigan ; stepdaughters, Pamala Sims, Milan and Linda Huggins, Sherrard; a stepson, Norman Fersch, Davenport ; 19 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Novella Miller, Margaret Richards, and Louise Ludwig all of Rock Island , Elsie Huntley, Andalusia , and Kathryn Klepper, Marysville , Wash.
