WEST END SETTLEMENT
There is an organization in Rock Island county that is doing a great deal of good, called the West End Settlement. In 1904 a series of cottage prayer meetings was held in the West End of Rock Island. Later a small room was rented for a Sunday school, which was sustained by free will offerings. As an outgrowth of this work, in 1909 a large building was erected, which is devoted to educational, physical and spiritual work.
There is a gymnasium, a kindergarten, and baths; domestic science is taught; and night school, and also sewing classes held. There is a large auditorium in which is held religious services every Sabbath and prayer meetings once a week. Social gatherings have their place also. In a cottage adjoining is a day nursery.
The principal patron of this institution is Mrs. Sue Denkmann Hauberg, who, while not the only donor, gave more largely than anyone else toward the building and its furnishings, and stands back of the enterprise with personal activity, counsel and financial support. The superintendent from the beginning has been Mrs. W. B. Barker, and her helpers are Miss Strom and Miss Barker.
