here at Illinois Ancestors...your path into the past!

At Illinois Ancestors we like to use a unique blend of genealogy and history. So not only do you find your ancestors but you will also

learn about the area in which they lived and worked.

We're a volunteer organization whose mission is to provide free genealogical data for all researchers.

If you have data that you'd like to share with researchers, I would love to put it online for everyone's benefit.

All contributors will be given credit and retain ownership

of the data they submit. Your information will never be used for profit in any way.

Being a completely independent site, we promise that your data will always remain
free for researchers to use for many years to come!

I'll add new data on a regular basis, so please come back often.

Michelle Ross has generously volunteered to look up obituaries for various counties in Illinois.

The List

Be sure to stop in on the second Saturday of each month and see the new Museum from 1-4 pm. located on Main street in McConnell. If you would like to join the Society membership fee is $100.00 lifetime memberships or $5.00 a year. Our meetings are the 1st Monday of each month, attendance is not required.

Genealogy for McConnell and Waddams Twp. and surrounding areas is still located at the old museum. Feel free to call the Society to make appointment to come work on genealogy. Robin Pardus and Allen Shippy would be glad to help you. They can also can open the new museum too for you.

The Society is still looking for familiy trees, copies of obits, funeral cards, Birth/Marriage/Death certificates, Cemetery and church records, History books of towns/counties etc., old photos of people/area and of course anything to do with McConnell. If you have anything we might be interested in don't be afraid to ask.

The Society also has a cemetery project going, where we are asking all to either photocopy, or scan, or type obits to us so that we can put them in a database for our 7 cemeteries. Please share obits with us so that we can get the databases finished.

The Basswood Cemetery CD's are done and are for sale for $15.00 plus $2.00 for shipping. They include a Cd of the tombstone photos and a Cd of transcriptions with obits.

Old courthouse

The Stephenson County Courthouse is the site for important memorials and monuments. The Civil War Soldiers Monument on the southwest corner was dedicated in 1871. It is made of Joliet marble with a twelve foot square base and is eighty-three feet high.

. Stephenson County was incorporated March 4, 1837 from Jo Daviess County. Stephenson County was named in memory of Colonel Benjamin Stephenson. He served as a Colonel in the War of 1812 in the Illinois Army. In 1813 he was appointed adjutant general of the territory.

Stephenson County covers 568 square miles
