Mrs. M.J. Eberhart Dies at Daughter's Home in Cazenovia - Funeral Services Held Sunday Afternoon, With Burial at Lowpoint

Mrs. Mary Jane Eberhart, for more than 60 years a resident of the vicinity of Cazenovia and Lowpoint, died last Friday, Feb. 12, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Stivers, in Lowpoint. She had been seriously ill several weeks.

As Mary Jane Wells she was born April 19, 1854, at Morganstown, West Virginia. She came to Illinois at an early age and was married to Mr. Eberhart. Her husband and four children, Clarence, Alice, Myrtle and May, preceded her in death.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Ida D. Stivers of Cazenovia and Mrs. Ella M. Smith of Peoria, who with other relatives and numerous friends are left to mourn the loss of a dear mother and highly esteemed neighbor and member of the community. She united with the Methodist church in young womanhood and lived true to her belief. She enjoyed the friendship of neighbors and it was her delight to visit with them whenever she could.

The body was brought to the Mason funeral home in Metamora and afterwards taken to the Stivers home in Cazenovia, where many friends paid their respects. Services were held Sunday, at 1:30 at the residence and at 2:30 in the Cazenovia church. The Rev. Mr. Hartley of Washburn was in charge of services. Many friends attended. The interment was in the Lowpoint cemetery.

FLANAGAN - Anna M. Eckhoff, 99, a resident of Good Samaritan Nursing Home and a lifelong Flanagan resident, died at 7:50 a.m. Monday (Aug. 7, 2000) at the nursing home.

Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. John's Lutheran Church, Flanagan, the Rev. George Hunt officiating. Burial will be in Center Cemetery, Flanagan. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Froelich Memorial Home, Flanagan, and one hour before the service Wednesday at the church.

Memorials may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, Good Samaritan Nursing Home, both of Flanagan, or to a charity of the donor's choice.

She was born July 10, 1901, in Benson, the daughter of Ulfert and Trientje "Kate" Uphoff Gastmann. She married Herman P. Eckhoff on Feb. 10, 1927, at Benson. He died April 9, 1972.

She is survived by one daughter, Mildred M. (Gene) McKinley, Flanagan; one son, Alvin (Eileen) Eckhoff, Flanagan; one sister, Lena Folkerts, Minonk; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The grandchildren are Greg (Tammy) McKinley; Beth (Phil) Colan; Diane (Rod) Litwiller; Joel (Dawn) Eckhoff; and Lynn (Tom) Battice. The great-grandchildren are Kyla, Brett and Brandy McKinley, Sydney Eckhoff, Devin Battice and Audrey Colan.

Her parents, two brothers and one sister preceded her in death.

She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Flanagan, and was a member of the Ruth Circle of the church. She was a charter member of the Flanagan-Graymont Home Extension. In the past, Mrs. Eckhoff had done a lot of volunteer work at both the Beulah Land Christian Home and Good Samaritan Home, both of Flanagan. She was a loving mother and grandmother and will be sadly missed.

Benson – On March 8th, the little girl of A. Eckhoff of Linn township, was buried in St. Peter’s cemetery, Rev. J. W. Haferman officiating. Little Lucile Berta Eckhoff was born Sept. 13, 1917 and baptized on Oct. 28, 1917. She was a strong and lively child but became a victim of the influenza in November 1918.

Christian B. Eden of Minonk dies, aged 85

Christian B. Eden, 85, died at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at his home in Minonk.

The body was taken to the Tallyn-Folkers memorial home, where visitation began at 2 p.m. Thursday.

His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at St Petri's Lutheran church at Windtown, with the Rev E. V. Schroeder officiating. Burial will be in Windtown cemetery.

He was born in Germany June 20, 1870, a son of Wessel and Etta Bockoven Eden. He married Tena Antons Jan. 29, 1900 at St Petri's Lutheran church at Windtown.

Surviving are his wife, three daughters, Mrs. Etta Janssen and Mrs. Gertrude Fricke, both of Minonk, and Mrs. Luella Renken of Flanagan; four sons, Wessel and Edwin, both of Flanagan, and Orville and Jake, both of Minonk; 19 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. A brother and two sisters preceded him in death.

He was a member of St Petri's Lutheran church. He came to this country when he was four and lived his entire life in the Minonk and Flanagan area.

EDE B. EDEN DIES AT MINONK AT AGE OF 82

Ede Behrends Eden, 82, died at 8:25 p.m. Sunday at the home of his son, Galt Eden. He had been ill about a year.


Funeral services were held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Galt Eden home and at 1:30 p.m. at the Windtown church. Burial was in the church cemetery.


Mr. Eden was born Oct. 6, 1861, in Wiesdschen Ostfriesland, Germany, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wessel Eden. He came to America with his parents when he was 14 years old. On May 3, 1885, he married Miss Anna Elizabeth Wilhelms.


Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Etta Folkerts of Flanagan; three sons, Wessel of Streator, Galt and Chris of Minonk; one brother, Christ of Minonk; 11 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Father of Mrs. Armstrong Dies

Galt I. Eden, 68, died at his home at 407 W. Fourth, Minonk, at 10:15 p.m. Tuesday, April 2.

His funeral was at 2 p.m. Friday at St Petri Lutheran Church at Windtown. The Rev. Marvin Drueger officiated and burial was in the church cemetery.

He was born May 31, 1894, in Minonk Township, a son of Ede B. and Anna Wilhelms Eden. He farmed until he retired and moved to Minonk in 1953. He was married to Gretke Rients at Windtown March 1, 1923.

Surviving are his wife; a son, Vernon, Minonk; a daughter, Mrs. LaVerne Armstrong, Metamora; a brother, Wessel B. Eden, Jr., Flanagan; and two grandchildren. A brother and two sisters preceded him in death.

He was a member of St Petri Lutheran Church and a Maple Grove School director for many years. He was a veteran of World War I.

MRS. T. G. EDEN, 59, OF MINONK DIED FRIDAY

Mrs. Trientze G. Eden, 59, of Minonk died at St. James hospital in Pontiac Friday at 6 a.m. following a long illness.


Funeral services were held Monday at 2 p.m. at the St. Petri Lutheran church at Windtown. The Rev. E.V. Schroeder officiated. Burial was in St. Petri cemetery.


Born Aug. 28, 1897 in Marshal county, she was a daughter of Tjard and Adline Onnen Upts. She was educated in rural schools of Marshall county, living in that county for 22 years. She married Christ B. Eden, Jr., in Marshall county Oct. 12, 1919. They resided east of Minonk until he died in 1946. Mrs. Eden has resided in Minonk the past two years and was a member of St. Petri’s Lutheran church.


Surviving is one brother, George Upts of rural route Minonk. She was preceded in death by her husband and one brother.

BENSON -- Esther A. Ehlers, 87, formerly of Benson, died at 9:20 p.m. Wednesday (Aug. 18, 2004) at the Apostolic Christian Home, Roanoke, where she was a resident.

She was born May 11, 1917, in rural Roanoke to Dick and Gertrude Johnson Redenius. She married W.H. "Bill" Ehlers on Oct. 12, 1940, in Benson. He died Dec. 6, 2000, in Normal.

Surviving are one daughter, Karen (Ron) Timmerman, Carlock; one grandson, Eric (Margarete) Timmerman, Adel, Iowa; one granddaughter, Kirsten (Jacob) Sturdy, St. Louis, Mo.; and one great-grandchild, Baby Sturdy.

She was preceded in death by her parents; twin infant sons, Stephen and Stanley; and one sister, Martha Manninga.

Esther was a housekeeper at the Apostolic Christian Home, Roanoke, working 25 years before she retired. She and her husband volunteered for many years at the Eureka Community Hospital.

Esther was a member of the St. Peter Lutheran Church, Benson, where she had taught Sunday School in the past and was also a member of the Ladies Aid.

Her funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at her church. The Rev William Hecht and the Rev Joseph Bleakley will officiate. Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at the church. Knapp-Johnson-Harris Funeral Home, Roanoke, is in charge of arrangements. Burial will be in the St. Peter Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Benson. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Peter Lutheran Church, Benson, the Apostolic Christian Home, Roanoke; or St. John Lutheran Church, Bloomington.

BENSON -- W. H. "Bill" Ehlers, 87, of 211 Adams St., Benson, died at 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, (Dec. 6, 2000) at BroMenn Regional Medical Center, Normal.

A Celebration of Life service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter Lutheran Church, rural Benson. The Rev. Peter Reuss and the Rev. Joe Bleakley will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Knapp-Johnson-Harris Funeral Home, Roanoke, and one hour before the service Saturday at the church. Burial will be in St. Peter Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Benson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Peter Lutheran Church, R.R. 1, Benson, IL 61516; or Good Samaritan Nursing Home, 205 N. Adams St., Flanagan, IL 61740.

He was born Feb. 11, 1913, in Morgan County, Mo., a son of Albert and Meta Brunjes Ehlers. He married Esther Redenius on Oct. 12, 1940, at Benson. She survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Karen Timmerman and her husband, Ron, of Carlock; one grandson, Eric Timmerman of Carlock; one granddaughter, Kirsten Sturdy and her husband, Jacob, of St. Louis, Mo.; two brothers, Walter (and Angeline) Ehlers of Chillicothe, Melvin (and Margaret) Ehlers of Cole Camp, Mo.; two sisters-in-law, Alice Sommerfeld of Kansas City, Mo., Marcile Ehlers of Corder, Mo.; six nephews and three nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, twin infant sons Stephen and Stanley, and four brothers.

Mr. Ehlers farmed, was self-employed as a feed mill operator, worked for Benson Elevator Co-op and, after retiring from Metamora Woodworking in 1978, worked for Benson Builders until 1985.

He was a member of the St. Peter Lutheran Church in rural Benson where he was treasurer and Sunday school teacher and served several terms on the church council.

He also was a member of the Board of Directors at Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Flanagan, and a 12-year volunteer at Eureka Community Hospital in Eureka.

Mrs. Henry Eilts Died Last Friday at Rest Haven

Mrs. Fola Eilts, 74, whose home was at 733 Chestnut street, died in the Minonk Rest Haven at 9:30 o'clock last Friday evening after a three years' illness.

The body was taken to the Tallyn-Folkers Memorial Home and Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon at St Paul's Evangelical and Reformed church, conducted by Rev Paul Buchmueller.

Burial was made in the Minonk cemetery. The pallbearers were Ben Mueller, Dr H. E. Bearss, John W. Meierhofer, John Foley, Joe Snyder and Gus Dittman. She was a member of St Paul's Evangelical church of this city. Mrs. Anna Meils and sons, Carl and James, of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., and Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Young of Pontiac, were here for the services.

Mrs. Eilts was born March 12, 1877, on a farm near Benson, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Uphoff. She was educated in the Benson community and lived there until her marriage to Henry Eilts, at the Lutheran church, west of Benson, on Feb. 13, 1899. Rev D. M. Ficken officiated. They spent their married life on a farm in Clayton township. He passed away in 1939, after which time she moved into Minonk.

Surviving are one son, Lester, of Rutland, one daughter, Mrs. Fannie Cline of Minonk; tow brothers, Otto Uphoff of Minonk, and Ben Uphoff of Prescott, Ariz.; two sisters, Mrs. Ella Young of Pontiac, and Mrs. Anna Meils of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., and five grandchildren. One brother and one sister preceded her in death.

Mrs. G. B. Eilts Dies

Mrs. George B. Eilts, wife of Alderman Eilts, of Minonk, died at the Streator hospital early Friday morning after an operation for appendicitis, the appendix having burst previously. She was 36 years old.


[Annette Rosene Seggerman Eilts was born 27 November 1878 in Minonk, a daughter of Jasper and Rixte Ludemann Seggermann. She married George B. Eilts 1 September 1897 in Minonk. She was the mother of two sons, Leonard and Walter. She died 28 July 1916 in Streator, LaSalle Co, Illinois. She is buried in the Minonk Township Cemetery.]

Roanoke - Greta F. Ekiss, 74, of R. R. 1, died at her home at 10 a.m. Friday of an apparent heart attack.

Her funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St Paul's Lutheran Church, Benson, the Rev Robert Halsey officiating. Burial will be in Roanoke City Cemetery.

She was born April 9, 1907, in Roanoke Township, the daughter of John and Fenna Woltzen Moritz. She married Lester R. Ekiss March 31, 1926, in Secor. He survives.

Also surviving are a son, Milton F., Valrico, Fla.; a brother, David Moritz Sr., Benson; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Four brothers and two sisters preceded her in death.

She was a member of St Paul's Lutheran Church. Memorials may be made to St Paul's Lutheran Memorial Fund.

Roanoke - The funeral of Lester R. Ekiss, 89, of Roanoke will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Remmert Funeral Home, Roanoke, with Ben Fehr officiating. Burial will be in the Roanoke City Cemetery.

Mr. Ekiss died at 10 a.m. Saturday (Oct 1, 1988) at his residence.

He was born Sept. 26, 1899, in Greene Township, a son of Floyd and Carrie Nofsinger Ekiss. He married Greta F. Moritz March 31, 1926, in Secor, She died May 15, 1981.

Survivors include one son, Milton F., Valrico, Fla.; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers.

Mr. Ekiss was a member of St Paul's Lutheran Church in Benson and a member of the Woodford County Farm Bureau.

He was a lifelong farmer in Greene Township until his retirement in 1976.

Memorials may be made to the Woodford County Cancer Fund.

Mrs. John Engler, nee Anna Staab, Dies at Late Home in Iowa

News of the death of Mrs. Anna Engler, formerly of Germantown, came as a shock to her friends and relatives here last Friday when she passed away from a heart attack at her home near Fairbanks, Iowa. Her husband, John Engler, passed away about six weeks ago.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at Fairbanks and burial was in the cemetery there beside her husband.

She was the daughter of John and Eva Staab and was born near Germantown where she spent her girlhood, and lived after her marriage to John Engler, until 22 years ago when they removed to Fairbanks, where she and her husband engaged in farming.

She is survived by one son Carl of Maynard, Ia., three daughters, Mrs. Ruth Collins, Jessup, Ia.; Mrs. Juanita Strain, Fairbanks, and Mrs. Annie Reist, Peoria, besides 10 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, two brothers, John and Michael Staab of Spring Bay township, two sisters; Mrs. Geo. Chidsey of Michigan, and Mrs. Wm. Morris of California.

Local relatives who attended the funeral were: John Staab, Michael Staab and sons Gerald and Michael, Mrs. August Krause and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Reese.

MRS. HARRY EVE DIES IN MINONK OF LONG ILLNESS

Mrs. Harry Eve died at 4 a. m. Thursday of last week at her home in Minonk after an illness of five years. As Miss Anna Bridget Bucklear she was born near Benson April 12, 1881 and married Harry Eve.

One daughter, Catherine, survives; also a brother Joseph Bucklear, and her mother, Mrs. Joseph Bucklear, Sr. both of Minonk.

The funeral was held at 9 a. m. Monday at the Catholic church in charge of the Rev. Fr. Patrick. Burial was in the Catholic cemetery.

George Eve, 54, Pekin, died about 7 p.m. Monday in the Pekin hospital. He suffered a stroke two weeks ago. The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Fickens memorial home in El Paso. The Rev. R. L. Beshers will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.

Mr. Eve was born at Minonk May 5, 1888, the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Eve Sr. He married Miss Bessie Fell of El Paso, who died in 1932. They had lived in El Paso several years, where he conducted a plumbing business with his brother, Charles. They left here about 1921.

He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Juanita Oltman of Benson, two sons, Donald of Pekin and Lawrence of near Peoria. Several grandchildren and a sister, Edna, whose address is unknown here, also survive.

Mrs. Talka Everding died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Albert Jacob Friday noon. She was one of Secor's oldest residents. She was born 17 Feb 1856 in Ostfriesland, Germany, the daughter of Anton and Henrietta Prusner. She married Henry Everding in 1874 in Germany. They came to this country in 1884 and resided in this vicinity the past forty years. Her husband preceded her in death.

Surviving are five children, Albert, Watertown, SD; Mrs Margaret Seggerman, Secor; Mrs. Willam Linder, Florence, SD; Anton of Cassiopolis, MI; Mrs. Albert Jacob, Secor; one brother, Anton Prusner, Homer, MI; and two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Franks, Camp, MI and Mrs. Reka Tasch, Homer, MI; 39 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

She was buried in Secor cemetery.
