Minonk Public School
Minonk Public School This picture from an old post card sold by "Edgar's 5 & 10 cent Store", was identified as a Minonk Public School It is obviously a "construction" picture from the early 1900's, but the building doesn't match any of the current Minonk schools. We would appreciate any information anyone could give us about this school. |

Secor Schools As in the history of the settling of America, the Secor area followed the familiar pattern of establishing first the home, with the church and school soon after. Before Palestine became a township, a school was begun in the home of Mrs. Clement Oatman, southwest of the present location of Secor. The first log schoolhouse, with a stick and mud chimney, was built in 1844. Records of this school were destroyed by fire. Nineteen hundred fifty-seven marks a centennial year of interest in education in Secor as the records show the first small frame school building was erected in 1857. William Hendron was the first teacher. This building was sold for a dwelling which at present is the home of Morris and Lawrence Gassner. |
School built in 1860, which served as the educational center until 1906. |
